Provost comments on housing figures

Issue date: 4/18/08 Section: Letters to the Editor
I read your article ("219 Students Wait-Listed for Housing," April 4) with interest and share [your] concern about providing an adequate number of on-campus housing options to our students.
I need, however, to correct the graphic that was included with the article, which suggests that our full-time undergraduate enrollment is rising at a faster rate than it is.
Full-time undergraduate enrollment rose approximately 2 percent this year, not the nearly 10 percent which the graphic suggests.
The 2004, 2005 and 2006 numbers reported for full-time undergraduates are correct, but the correct 2007 number is 6,991, not 7,556 (a number which includes both full-time and part-time students).
In closing, let me note that we are actively evaluating our housing needs in light of increasing enrollments and will do our best to "right size" our program.
I appreciate your continued interest and support as we explore ways to improve the living and learning environment at SLU.
