Humphrey's to be partly smoke-free
Jean Puccinelli
Issue date: 4/11/08 Section: Letters to the Editor
Smoke.free.slu is a rapidly growing group dedicated to making Saint Louis University a safe and healthy environment for its students.
As everyone knows, secondhand smoke is extremely harmful. Comparing smoking to drinking or other controversial issues is dodging the main point that smoking is dangerous to everyone. Smoking around campus and in front of buildings is unfair to people who want to breathe clean air.
A smoke-free campus would simply mean that smokers would have to smoke on sidewalks and off main campus. This is not unreasonable. Everyone here at SLU has the right to breathe clean air.
According to the referendum, 63 percent of SLU's students would like to live on a smoke-free campus. SLU should be concerned about both the majority opinion of students and the safety of its students. More than 105 campuses nationwide have already gone smoke-free.
The fact of the matter is that smoke.free.slu is a group legitimately concerned for Saint Louis University's students, tackling plausible public-health issues like secondhand-smoke exposure. While there are other health concerns on campus, this is one that needs to be addressed, now.
If you want to support smoke.free.slu and eat in a safe and healthy environment, join us at Humphrey's on April 13 and 14. Because of the suggestion of students during the smoke.free.slu campaign, Humphrey's has agreed to become smoke-free on Sundays and Mondays, starting in a week. We are thrilled that Humphrey's recognizes the right of everyone to breathe clean air.

It's great to see that Humphery's has finally seen the light. Now, thankfully, all of the Sunday and Monday drinkers will have a place to booze, smoke-free, aside from the solitude of their darkened apartments. (Continued…)

The adminstration should listen to the majority of the students and go smoke free like many other universities have already done. It' not fair to the vast majority who don't smoke to still have to walk through clouds of toxic secondhand smoke. (Continued…)

Not just "toxic", Pete, secondhand smoke is patently lethal. I don't appreciate you giving these smokers an opening by diminishing the true threat of secondhand smoke with frail adjectives. (Continued…)

Humphreys will never go smoke free unless it mandated by law. They however would like to see SLU go smoke free and also be alcohol free. Both of these things will increase the revenues of our favorite bar. (Continued…)
