Grabau addresses building changes at Senate meeting

From spot-funding drama and stomp team performances to proposals for Busch Student Center and International Center updates, this week's Student Government Association meeting saw its fair share of theatrics.
A large part of the Wednesday, March 26, meeting focused on a presentation regarding changes to the BSC, presented by BSC Building Manager Chris Grabau, Dean of Students Scott Smith, Assistant Vice President for Student Development Leanna Fenneberg and SGA President Andrew Clifton.
The proposal listed a number of changes regarding new initiatives in the student center, including new hours and "grab n' go" refrigerators (see "Chartwells updates BSC dining options" on Page 1 for further information).
In an attempt to increase use of the third floor to match that of the first and second floors, plans are underway to move the commuter lounge from its location on the third floor to what is currently the silent-study lounge on the second floor. The Student Involvement Center, located in BSC Suite 335, would move to Suite 319, and the former commuter lounge space and former Student Involvement Center space would then be combined to create a new Student Success Center.
Many of the services currently located across campus in the Academic Resource Center will find a new home in the Student Success Center, such as Career Services, academic support and pre-major advising.
Grabau said that these changes should be in place by the fall semester.
Fenneberg said that she hoped the BSC would be a hub for students.
"We want to create a center that will bring all these different offices together," Fenneberg said.
Grabau said that he hoped to have computers in The Bean and Grand Market updated during the summer, and to have more lunch concerts and bookstore events, possibly beginning later this semester. New paint and carpeting are also in the works.
Also in Wednesday's meeting:
•The Indian Student Association was unanimously awarded $3,715.20 in spot-funding.
• After lengthy debate, Phi Alpha Theta was awarded $0 in spot-funding, in a close vote.
• Asian Students In Action was awarded $200 in spot-funding, by a narrow margin.
• Both SLU Campus Kitchen and SLU Step, after a brief performance, became fully chartered student organizations.
