Chartwells Dining Services welcomed students returning from their Spring Break festivities with a variety of changes to Grand Market and The Bean, both located in the Busch Student Center.

One such change was the extension of Grand Market's operating hours from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday, effective this week. The weekend hours were not changed. Eric Macharia, a manager for The Bean who consults with Chartwells, said that this change was made primarily because of requests from students.

Chris Grabau, BSC building manager, said, "My hope is [that] theĀ improvementsĀ to the Grand Market Place will prove to be great options for students who want to eat and socialize after hours."

Macharia said there was thorough consultation period in which Chartwells discussed with and received approval from several organizations, including the Student Government Association and the Food Issues Committee, before the changes were implemented.

Grand Market has also added frozen food items and an expanded selection of refrigerated items.

"Students now have the option to just run out with some food [from Grand Market]," Macharia said.

Macharia said there is a distinct difference between Salsarita's and Grand Market because the BSC lacked a place where students could simply pick up frozen or refrigerated foods to eat elsewhere.

A&W restaurant, located within Grand Market, will also extend its hours until 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Another change now in effect for Grand Market is the addition of a pizza pick-up service, through Famiglia's.

Students can phone ahead and place their order by calling 977-1612.

The appearance of Grand Market has also been rearranged to provide ample room for the expanded refrigerated section and the new frozen section.

Some students said that it has made Grand Market more aesthetic.

"When I first walked into [Grand Market] this week, I was really surprised to see how much they improved the layout of the restaurant by making just a few changes," said junior Kevin Dwyer.

The Bean expanded its options this week with new flavored syrups and a new iced tea, Tropic Iced Tea.

Restaurants across campus have experienced smaller changes.

Salsarita's now offers Mexican pizzas for $5.49, and the Ameren Café now offers a Kaldi's Coffeehouse, open until 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Not to be outdone, Au Bon Pain had a few changes itself. Students may have noticed increased seating and an increased number of available soups.
