Racial case brings social awareness

The nation's most divisive racial case in years affected Saint Louis University on Tuesday, Sept. 18, when the fraternity group Alpha Pi Alpha and the Society of African-American Studies hosted a forum to discuss the controversy known as "Jena Six." The discussion was followed by a candelight vigil around the Clock Tower.
Billiken Bucks go out to eat
Program is now accepted at local St. Louis eateries

As of Oct. 1, the Saint Louis University ID card will expand its influence beyond campus borders. A new program devised by Barnes and Noble Scholars and SLU Parking and Card Services will allow students to use their Billiken Bucks at nearby restaurants, including Vito's, Joe Boccardi's, Santo Bento, Iggy's Mexican Cantina and the Domino's on Lindell Boulevard.

Northwest Academy students to participate in mock trial

Three members of the Saint Louis University community have devoted most of their time over the past few months to develop a volunteer program at a local school. Pre-Law Professor Janet O'Hallaron, senior Nikki Jaswal and law student Raven Akram have developed a program that will instruct students at Northwest Academy about the processes of law in order to prepare them for a statewide competition in November.
Hunger crisis tackled by student group

Saint Louis University has a long history of being an institution that places much emphasis on service. One of the newest groups to reach the SLU community, Nourish International, headed by sophomore Milap Dubal, aims to continue that tradition by working to relieve the hunger crisis in impoverished areas of the world.
Brown University professor addresses evolution, religion

Kenneth Miller, Ph.D-a professor of cellular biology at Brown University-gave his lecture "At the Crossroads of Science and Religion" last night on the first floor of the Busch Student Center. His lecture discussed how he can combine his belief in the theory of evolution with his deep religious faith.
Interesting person of the week: Phyllis Weliver, Ph.D.

Freshman students are not the only new faces at Saint Louis University this year. Phyllis Weliver is a new member of the community as well, as a professor in the English Department. She holds a Ph.D. and is a renowned English scholar with a specialty in Victorian literature and culture.
Zeta Tau Alpha colonizes SLU

Beginning this school year, Saint Louis University will get its sixth sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha. "Starting a new chapter with new traditions is very exciting," said freshman Jessica Vinduska. The Bid Day celebration took place on Sept. 9. According to ZTA extension Director Karen Mills, more than 120 women pledged during the celebration.

Website would enable students to rate and comment on their teachers

The Student Government Association met Wednesday, Sept. 19, for the third time this year. Among the topics of discussion were a new amendment to SGA's constitution and the possibility of a new student website for evaluating-and criticizing-professors. Parks College Senator Sean Flanagan, a senior, proposed an amendment to SGA's constitution; it was almost identical to an amendment had already been passed last year.
