Tennis
The Saint Louis University women's tennis team opened the 2007-2008 season with a successful showing at the Billiken Classic held this past Friday through Sunday.
The Billikens competed against Illinois State and Murray State over the weekend.
Fifth-year senior Amanda Hellberg compiled a 1-1 record in singles matches over the weekend, while junior Joe Becker finished the weekend at 2-1.
Hellberg saw her first action with the Billikens since last fall, after taking the spring semester off due to family reasons.
As a team, the Bills recorded a 4-6 record in doubles matches.
The Billikens hit the court next at the Mizzou Invitational in Columbia, MO on October 12-14.
"I'm very proud of the effort all 10 of our players displayed both yesterday and today," Zych said. "I even got compliments from the other coaches about how much improved we look this season. Both days we looked like the team that was ready to go every match. We were very focused. This was a truly positive way to start this season."
Cross-Country
The Saint Louis University men's and women's cross country teams travel to Notre Dame this weekend to compete in the National Catholic Championships.
The women placed sixth last year in the event while the men finished seventh.
The women's team will see senior Laura Coyer run in her first meet of the year to strengthen an already strong team.
Coyer joins the varsity squad, which was led by Mary Moloney to a third place finish two weeks ago at the Wash U Early Bird Meet.
On the men's side, seniors Steve Vargas and Tim Hamilton, seeing their first action of the season, look to propel the Bills to a strong finish against stiff competition.
The Bills were led by freshman Brian Holdmeyer and senior Mat Stuber at the Wash U meet. The men's varsity squad will see three seniors and three freshmen competing.
Both the men's and women's teams will have a junior varsity squad competing as well.
Competition kicks off with the JV race at on Friday, followed by the varsity women's race, and concludes with the varsity men's race.
