What do an iguana, a Fr. Biondi Burrito and a fresh coat of orange paint have in common? Give up? All of these items are part of recently opened Iggy's Mexican restaurant.
Iggy's Mexican Cantina opened for business Wednesday, Aug. 29, and is a combination restaurant and sports bar. The establishment is owned and operated by a group of friends who currently run a variety of restaurants and sports bars in the greater St. Louis Area.

"We just liked the location. This area needed something like this," said restaurant co-owner and co-manager Ken Vogt. The restaurant is located on Laclede Street, next to the Village Apartments.

"We try to serve everybody that we can. We stay open pretty late," said Vogt. The kitchen remains open until midnight, and the staff serves patrons until midnight or 1 a.m., depending on the night.

Vogt said that the restaurant is able to seat approximately 150 customers in the indoor seating area. The eatery also boasts two outdoor patios, bringing the total seating capacity to approximately 400.

The Fr. Biondi Burrito is one of many options to choose from the menu. Not only is an entrée named after Saint Louis University President Lawrence Biondi, S.J., but the restaurant itself is named after one of Biondi's pets.

"We named the place after his dog," said Vogt. The name Iggy was also used to create the restaurant's mascot, Iggy the Iguana.

"Iggy the Iguana just kind of stuck," said Vogt.

The restaurant also welcomes people to rent out the patio space for private parties.

"We don't charge anything to rent it out, we just want you to pay for food and dinks," said Vogt. Catering and take-out are also options for Iggy's customers. Vogt said that there are already parties for more than 100 people booked at the restaurant.

Along with a Monday through Friday Happy Hour from 3 to 7 p.m, Iggy's has specials available on select evenings. On "$2 Tuesday", customers can enjoy two tacos for $2, along with $2 house margaritas, domestic bottles, and draft beers.

Customers are also able to view NFL games in the restaurant every Sunday. Live entertainment is in the works and is expected to begin in approximately a month.

"We will be having karaoke on Wednesday and Thursday nights, and a DJ or live music on Fridays and Saturdays," said restaurant co-owner and co-manager Jeff Pfitzer. SLU students have commented on the quality and value of the food at Iggy's, saying that customers are able to get a lot of food for their money.

"It is so good, and my burrito was only like $5," said SLU senior Stephanie Wilga. Vogt and Pfitzer are optimistic about Iggy's Mexican Cantina and hope the SLU students and neighborhood residents take advantage of the new dining establishment.
