Sixth year running: Una takes back the night

A group of students gathered Tuesday to participate in Take Back the Night, a world-wide event that seeks to combat violence against women and raise awareness for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Take Back the Night, an event sponsored at Saint Louis University by Una, the campus' feminist student group, is centered around a march in which women make an effort to assert their ability to walk alone at night, free from the fear of sexual assault.

SGA unanimously passes resolution supporting The University News

The Student Government Association at Saint Louis University passed a resolution on May 2 urging the Board of Trustees to postpone considerations on scrapping The University News' current charter. The resolution passed unanimously. The University News at Saint Louis University received word Monday, April 30, that the Board of Trustees would vote on May 5 to rescind their current charter.

SLU will join the Workers' Rights Consortium

In 1999, one Saint Louis University student began a campaign to ensure that SLU would continue the fight against sweatshops. On Tuesday, April 24, SLU President Lawrence Biondi, S.J., made the final decision to join the Workers' Rights Consortium, an organization that strives to prevent inhumane factory working conditions.

Advising system set for summer overhaul

Saint Louis University's undergraduate academic advising system is set for a major overhaul this summer. Spurred by student dissatisfaction with the current system, University administrators have made plans to reorganize advising and hire new staff members.

Relay for Life exceeds expectations

As freshman Roxanne Bertrand stepped around the track, she remembered many things about her mother's fight with breast cancer: visiting her mother in the hospital, watching her father shave off her mother's hair, choosing a wig for her mother to wear. More importantly, though, Bertrand realized how raising money for cancer research is a step toward the cure.

SUFA and OneWorld to host Dance-a-thon this Saturday

Students United for Africa and OneWorld, the student-produced social justice magazine, will be hosting a dance-a-thon on Saturday, April 28, from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the Saint Louis Room in the Busch Student Center. All proceeds from the event will benefit a school that SUFA is building in Kasena, Ghana.

SGA finalizes funding process

At the latest meeting of the Student Government Association, senators wrapped up the annual funding process and, for the second time this month, broke the four-hour mark. Senate used most of its time dealing with chartered student organizations' allocation appeals, constitutional amendments and spot-funding.

Four students receive Mev Puleo scholarship

Scholarships are frequently a simple award of some sort, bequeathed to students with the potential to excel. Some scholarships reward and promote academic excellence alone, but there are others, like Saint Louis University's Mev Puleo scholarship, that reward and promote a multi-faceted approach of not just academics, but solidarity as well.

U. News takes home MCMAs

The University News gathered a few awards on April 14 from the Missouri Collegiate Media Association's annual college press awards. The University News won first and second place in the Best Entertainment Cartoon category. Diana Benanti took second place for Best Feature Page, and Dave Decepida, Matt Lehner and Steve Root and The University News also received two honorable mentions for Best Feature Page.

Argentinean author speaks on literature

Carlo Auditorium in Tegeler Hall was about half-filled on Monday afternoon as best-selling Argentinean author Ana MarĂ­a Shua spoke to Saint Louis University students. Shua has published more than 50 works in various genres, including novels, folklore collections, mystery, children's fiction and poetry.

BSA to hold fashion show Saturday

The Black Student Alliance will be hosting a fashion show to raise money for a local family on Sunday, April 29, in the BSC's Saint Louis Room. The BSA's annual fashion show has been in existence for more than five years. This year, the event's director, Erica Lavalle, is coordinating the festivities under the theme of "A Night in Hollywood.

Fox News' Malkin takes on the 'Girls Gone Wild culture'

On April 23, author, columnist and Fox News correspondent Michelle Malkin delivered a speech and answered questions concerning what she calls "the Girls Gone Wild culture." Malkin spoke from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Busch Student Center ballroom. After the event, the Great Issues Committee invited Malkin to a reception.

Salvage drive turns trash to treasure

As students prepare for their move back home, they throw away many items in their rooms to lighten their move-out load. The Saint Louis University Spring Cleaning Salvage Drive aims to put these items to better use. The Salvage Drive allows students to donate materials that they would otherwise discard.
