Saint Louis University's communication department will lose a 13-year veteran SLU professor at the end of this year.

John Pauly, Ph.D., was offered and has accepted a job as dean of Marquette University's college of communication.

"I wasn't looking for just any position," Pauly said. "This is a terrific opportunity that might not be around in a few years."

In 1993, Pauly joined the SLU community as chairperson of the department, a position he held for nine years. After stepping down as chairperson in 2002, Pauly continued to teach communication classes.

"It's a significant loss," current department chairperson Kathleen Farrell, Ph.D., said. "He's been instrumental in building the department, in fostering teaching excellence and excellence in research, and he gained a lot of ground in [the department's] intellectual reputation.

"He's well-known as a scholar," she said.

Pauly lamented that he would not be able to teach as much in his new position as dean. "I've had 13 years here," he said. "I've taught a lot more in the last four years, and it's been wonderful.

"As dean, I'll probably teach one course a year, at most," he said. "My department and the University in general have had a strong relationship with the students. As dean, I won't have as much of a history with students.

"I have such a good time teaching," he said. "It's a loss for me, not to be able to teach."

Pauly said that his decision to leave was indeed a difficult one. "Ours is an unusually good department," he said. "We've really managed to make this program work at SLU for the last 13 years; I wasn't going to accept just anything that came along."

One factor that affected Pauly's decision is Marquette's location: much closer to Chicago, where Pauly and his wife have family.

Another is the $28 million gift that Marquette's college of communication will be receiving.

"The opportunity to help shape a college program doesn't come around every day," Pauly said.
