The administrative offices of the College of Arts and Sciences will briefly close their doors during a move, tentatively scheduled for Dec. 6 and 7.
During this two-day window, the college will leave its home of at least 20 years in Ritter Hall and relocate to the second floor of Fusz Hall in an area formerly occupied by the Institute of Jesuit Sources.
University Provost Joe Weixlmann, Ph.D. proposed the move in late summer, and the decision was made earlier this semester.
The administration dean, three associate deans, the business manager and a number of other staff from the College of Arts and Sciences will pack their things this week to prepare for the move.
The main reason for the college's move is to create more space in Ritter Hall for expanding classrooms, labs and other offices.
With the number of students in each entering class increasing annually, more classrooms are needed to accommodate the students.
J. Michael Sproule, Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, sees certain benefits associated with the new locale of the college.
"The new offices in Fusz will be more central to campus, and we will have larger space there as well," Sproule said.
Though Sproule and others were initially apprehensive about the college's visibility in Fusz Hall, a marked side entrance will be opened in order to ensure that students are aware of the college's location.
The college is looking forward to the move and hopes to reopen its doors to students about on Dec. 7.
