SLU to implement new printing costs

SLU will soon be installing five new, high capacity Kyocera laser printers and photocopiers in Griesedieck, Marchetti West, Fusz, Reinert and Marguerite halls. These machines will be located in common areas, so that students in other residence buildings can utilize the location most convenient to them at the time. In addition, SLU is installing five faster, higher-quality Kyocera printers in the Des Peres Hall, Ritter Hall and McDonnell Douglas Hall computer labs.
All of these printers will be networked, meaning that students can send a print job from any lab or residence and have it printed on any of these machines. The print job will be stored on a central computer until the student reaches the printer of choice and selects it to be printed from the on-site controls. For this reason, students will need an active SLU ID card with a Billiken Bucks balance to print, once this system is implemented.
In the hopes of reducing overall costs, ITS will be implementing a pay-per-print system once the new equipment is in place. The cost will be five cents per printed page and 10 cents per photocopy. The printing cost will be applicable both in the residence halls and in the computer labs across campus.
An e-mail sent out earlier this week announced that students in the John Cook School of Business will each be allotted a printing credit on their SLU IDs, and that the credit will only be accepted in the Cook computer lab. The amount of the credit for business students has not yet been determined.
The new equipment and policies are expected to be in place by January 2003. ITS said that the most difficult part of this project has been selecting the right equipment. While the SLU network already had built in capabilities for linking the printers to all locations, choosing a server that could handle University-wide printing need was crucial. The selection of newer, faster printers to replace the existing units was also important, and ITS seems confident that their choice will help SLU students enjoy a new level of convenience with regard to technology.
Any student whose Student ID does not currently have a Billiken Bucks balance--or whose ID is no longer in functional condition- should contact Parking and Card Services in DuBourg 33 so that they will be able to print, once the changes are implemented.

Why should the business students get a credit? My chemistry lab requires me to print off my own labs and prelabs. Now its going to cost me to print something my teachers make me print?!

I dont understand this whole thing. We are already paying the university tons of money and are already getting knickel and dimed away at the food courts for extra toppings and such. (Continued…)

The reason the business students are getting a credit is because the Business School computer lab isn't run by ITS. It is paid for by the school it self, but they had to go to pay for print as well so the dean felt he should give the students a credit for printing that their teachers make them do. (Continued…)

Why is it that this school can get people to donate statues of naked people to put up all around campus, but they won't get them to donate money for things to further our education like PAPER AND PRINTERS!

I believe this upgrade towards faster printers wasn't at all discussed with the students on campus. The 'old' printers worked just fine and upgrading to bigger and better printers is not in the best interest of any student who is on a budget plan at SLU. (Continued…)

We don't need this "upgrade". It seems like the administration has no pulse on what the students need. We know the computer labs have set hours, if we need to go there to print something, we have to "find time" to make it there before it closes. (Continued…)

amen to the last 5 postings. the biggest reason that we're getting these "improvements" is because ITS is over it's paper budget.. I know that I've wasted a lot of paper, and time while trying to print out long documents that are REQUIRED for courses. (Continued…)

As an SPS student I, admittedly, may not be in touch with the needs and concerns of traditional students and of the day school.
Why can't faculty and staff, in all schools not just business, be issued a credit to cover printing they assign to students?
Students should be responsible for personal printing but assigned printing needs to be covered in tuition or class fees. (Continued…)

There is absolutely no need for new computers or printers. What ever happened to concern for student expenses? Tuition has already increased. Is not that enough? Some students like myself can barely afford to attend SLU. (Continued…)

Parks engineering and aviation students already pay a technology fee for the computer labs and computer classrooms in McDonnell Douglas Hall. I do not understand why Parks students have to pay additional money to use the printing equipment covered by our technology fees!
I honestly do not think that the establishment of campus-wide printing fees is a positive move for the SLU community. (Continued…)
