Show SGA the money

Chris Wintrode February 15, 2008
Our student Government Association needs a new theme song, and I have a good suggestion. Remember Donald Trump's "Apprentice" theme? The lyrics begin, "Money, Money, Money, Money . Money!" The O'Jays, singing "For the Love of the Money," might have had our student government in mind when they were singing this song back in the '70s.

SLU women silenced, again

John Nolan February 15, 2008
Saint Louis University's women's rights group Una planned to hold a show today called "A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer." The show was to be presented tonight at 7 p.m. in Tegeler Hall. The Department of Student Life and Dean of Students Scott Smith informed Una that it was not allowed to show the piece on SLU's campus.

Super Tuesday, delegates, choices

Lew Griffith February 15, 2008
Super Tuesday has come and gone, with a topsy-turvy week of delegate-snatching by all candidates. Much to John McCain's surprise and delight, his closest combatant for the Republican nomination, Mitt Romney, withdrew so as to strengthen the party. Romney withdrew because he wants the GOP to build a steadfast reputation for the coming onslaught of the Democratic nominee come this fall.

A modest proposal for God’s children

Nick Calcaterra February 15, 2008
The Student Government Association's recent efforts to restrict smoking on campus have been well-debated. Many delightful, intelligent senators have politely pointed out that smoking needs to limited or banned on campus, due to the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.

Students scrapping the ‘scraping by’ mentality

R.H. Popli February 15, 2008
For many college students, scraping by has become a way of life. In my opinion, "scraping by" is a mentality in which one does as little work as possible to persist without considerable consequence. By consequence, I mean results, both beneficial and deleterious.

Memories and monologues

Editorial Board February 15, 2008
Until Last Week, Saint Louis University students directing "A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant, and a Prayer"-a theater piece produced by members of Una, SLU's feminist organization-had little to worry about. They had booked Tegeler Hall for tonight and Saturday, Feb.

Dear SGA: We need to talk

Editorial Board February 15, 2008
Dearest Student Government Association, Is something wrong? You've been acting rather distant lately. Valentine's Day came and went, and you never called. I thought about sending you some roses, maybe a box of chocolates or a few life-sized teddy bears. But then, I realized that these niceties would do no good.

‘Generation Entitlement’ enjoys narcissism

NICOLE PUHL February 8, 2008
THEY CALL US "Generation Y," the "Second Baby Boom," and sometimes even "Generation Nexters." But what about "Generation Entitlement"? Stars of MTV's "My Super Sweet 16" surely exude a sense of entitlement, but dubbing a whole generation as such has seemed a bit rash by my standards.

No fear for the new year

Samiksha Tarun February 8, 2008
How did it go by so quickly? Already, more than one month of 2008 has passed. Just yesterday, we were writing New Year's resolutions. Today, we are reminded of the passage of time and, perhaps guiltily, of those resolutions. Have you gotten closer to the goals you set at the beginning of the year? Are you any closer to accomplishing the things you want to accomplish? Are you any closer to being the person you want to be? As I reflect upon these questions, I realize that my own response is a disheartening no.

Predicting politics in The World in 2008

Allison Reilly February 8, 2008
It's February already, and I can't believe I've gone this long without The Economist's World in 2008. No, seriously. This situation is dire. This annual special outlines the past year's events and makes predictions for the next. It covers the most prominent issues of local, regional and international importance.

Step out of your life, into understanding

Dorotea Lechkova February 8, 2008
Sometimes, life unexpectedly shows us little glimpses of the lives of others. A few months ago, I was completing some volunteer work for an inquiry class when something very particular happened. It was a completely normal day, and, had I not paid attention, none of what happened would have mattered.

Living up to leadership

Editorial Board February 8, 2008
Lent is a season of sacrifice, especially for Catholics. From Ash Wednesday to Easter, Catholics abstain from a sinful indulgence of their choice-sugar, smoking and sloth top the list every year-to mirror the sacrifices of Jesus Christ. And after a rollicking Super Bowl, a ballot-swamped Super Tuesday and a gumbo-stuffed Mardi Gras, we've had our fill of worldly excess.
