The chick who cried wolf? The year of living dangerously

A very wise man once told me that the spring semester this year would be the worst in recent history-an outrageous increase in tuition, a lack of student leadership and the impending doom of this publication were all cited as the reasons why, even in January, students should have been trembling in fear and expecting the worst.

U. News takes home MCMAs

The University News gathered a few awards on April 14 from the Missouri Collegiate Media Association's annual college press awards. The University News won first and second place in the Best Entertainment Cartoon category. Diana Benanti took second place for Best Feature Page, and Dave Decepida, Matt Lehner and Steve Root and The University News also received two honorable mentions for Best Feature Page.

Underappreciated bands: The ’60s

Through this series of articles, we hope to expose our peers to relatively unknown or underappreciated bands. Bands that people are familiar with and rightly admire were immediately excluded from consideration (the Stones, Beatles, etc). This year, in each remaining edition of The University News, we'll spotlight bands and artists from a particular decade that we think would appeal to a large number of people.

The USA TODAY Collegiate Readership Program started back up on Monday, March 19, after students voted to keep the program on campus in February's Student Government Association election. Mary Ramatowski, the regional marketing manager for USA TODAY, said the program will continue until May 4.

DPS hikes security, investigates Village robberies

The St. Louis Police Department and the Department of Public Safety are conducting a continuing investigation into on-campus robberies that occurred on March 9 and 10. Between the hours of 11 p.m. on March 9 and 6 a.m. on March 10, six apartments in the Village were entered, while most students were away for spring break.

Another Town Hall meeting

The Department of Housing and Residence Life and the Department of Public Safety have called a town hall meeting on Weds., March 21 at 5pm in Xavier Hall, room G13. Representatives of Residence Life and DPS will be on hand to answer student questions and concerns about on-campus safety.

SLU Alum donates $12 million for Chaifetz Arena

It's official: The Saint Louis University arena will be named the Chaifetz Arena. SLU announced on Wednesday that the naming rights will go to Dr. Richard A. Chaifetz, who recently gifted the University $12 million. The 10,600 seat multipurpose arena is slated to open in March 2008.

A love letter to SGA-sort of.

What would Adam Meister do? That question has been ringing in my head for three weeks since the start of this lovely SGA election season. That name, Meister, may be unfamiliar to some, but, truth be told, watching recent events unfold has made me nostalgic for the Meister Administration.

Una performs “Vagina Monologues” next weekend

UNA will perform The Vagina Monologues Feb. 9 and 10 at the Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center, 2711 Locust. For the last four years, Una, SLU's student feminist organization, has staged productions of The Vagina Monologues at on campus venues. The Monologues have been the foundation of the V-Day movement.

Theology meets technology

Through 3-D RT (Real Time) technology similar to that found in video games, two professors here at Saint Louis University, James Ginther, Ph.D., and Jay Hammond, Ph.D., have developed an interactive, three-dimensional virtual tour of the renowned Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi in Assisi, Italy.

Solidarity with Palestine examines conflict

Discussion on one of the most contentious issues in international politics will come to Saint Louis University next week. From Jan. 29 to Feb. 2, SLU Solidarity with Palestine will sponsor a series of events exploring the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Dubbed "Palestine Awareness Week," sessions will include a screening of a documentary film, an original theatrical piece and a lecture by a controversial scholar.

Tuition Hiked to $28,480 for ’08

Saint Louis University officials will announce today that tuition for the 2007-2008 academic year will increase by 8.5 percent from last fiscal year. For most students, housing cost will increase 3 percent to 4 percent, depending on the housing sites. Meal plan rates will remain the same.
