Swimming looks to improve on Show Me Showdown

Swimming looks to improve on Show Me Showdown

The Show Me Showdown saw SLU swimming continue their season with a couple of middle-of-the-pack finishes for the men’s and women’s swim and dive teams. The event took place at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo., on Friday, Oct. 7.

The men’s team finished sixth out of ten total teams, and the women’s team finished fourth out of nine. Several Billiken men earned a spot in the finals. In the men’s 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Brian North finished seventh out of 44 competitors with a time of 21.42. Meanwhile, junior Ryan McCoy finished fourth out of 73 swimmers in the men’s 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.93.

The women’s team also had several strong performances in the Show Me Showdown. The women’s 100-yard butterfly final saw freshman Savannah Nichols finish the swim in 59.26 seconds, good enough for eighth place. Meanwhile, when it came to long-distance events, junior Mina Glenesk finished the race in 5:06.58, helping her to third place overall. The women’s 100-yard backstroke also had a strong SLU performance, with junior Riley Kirby finishing eighth of 43 competitors with a time of 59.06. In addition, the women’s 100-yard breaststroke saw freshman Emily Kishish finish sixth of 36 individuals, with a time of 1:09.38.

The Billikens hope to build on their performances in the Show Me Showdown when they face off against Western Illinois and UALR on Oct. 21. That meet will be a home meet for the Billikens, held at SLU’s Simon Rec Center. They will continue with their meet schedule until February. In February, the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship will take place in Geneva, Ohio. SLU will attempt to continue improving as the season moves to the A-10 Championships.
