LoL Response to Greek and Oriflamme Article

Dear students of Saint Louis University,

Hello and hiya from the League of Laughter Improv Comedy team!  Yes, our name spells “LoL,” and we love it too.  The reason we are writing this letter is to offer a sincere thank you to the University News, and especially to its opinion column editor.  We’ve revised our club a lot in the past few weeks, and the past two articles on Oriflamme and the Greek community have truly inspired us.  If possible, we highly recommend reading those articles before continuing on.  They have served as our inspiration and prompted us to really look inward and think about the direction of our organization.

“So what happened?  What did you do?”  Well, inquiring SLU student, we can tell you that our first step was to find a place to eat.  Seriously, we’re always hungry.  And boom!  We completed the first step of our three-part plan.  Next step: unionize.

You see, the League of Laughter does improv comedy, kind of like Whose Line is it Anyway? stuff.  It’s tough work, and we practice a lot.  We even do shows every month or so for free!

“For free?” you ask incredulously (we have Word of the Day calendars).  “You’re offering your skills and time to better the whole community of the school, creating a greater environment for students and doing so without being paid?”

Yes we do.  But then our tyrant leader and democratically-elected president ordered us to unionize, so there was no choice.  Something about how we deserved wages, but mostly because we were bored.

All we needed was to find a group of improv players for our union.  Easy!  They show up every Friday at practice.  Next, we needed a figurehead.  We were pretty stuck at this point because, seriously, what student organization has a union?  So we rallied behind our symbolic leader, the opinion section of the UNews.

Finally, it was time to put our union to the test, but we needed a new “edg-ier” image.  No longer are we the League of Laughter.  From now on, we shall be known as the “League” of Laughter, a completely new organization ready to tackle the world.  Free shows for students?  Bah!  That’s the old “League”, when it was just the League.  We started ticket sales last week.  One ticket for one million pesos!  We chose one million because it sounded like a lot, and we chose pesos instead of dollars because we enjoy the word “pesos.”

The final step was to gain influence, and so we needed to join a larger organization; unionize the union.  There weren’t a lot of options available, so we looked towards the Greek community.  But therein lied a problem: how much influence did Greek life have?  What if their influence changed our new “League?”  We couldn’t risk it, so we started our own community.

Move over, Greek life.  The Roman Society is here.

Without funding or experience, but graced with an attitude of apathy towards most things, the new Roman “League” of Laughter was ready to become powerful.  We remembered the massive influence and threat that the Greeks possessed, and chose to model our new organization after them.

Our “League” needed to be centralized with a single goal: spread Roman influence.  We can’t do what the Greeks did with their club sports, volunteer ministry, or other extracurriculars.  We Romans aren’t allowed to partake in those affairs.  Philanthropy?  More like “philanthro-lame” that had to go.  It was only after getting rid of all the dead-weight that our true Roman society blossomed.

The Roman “League” of Laughter is here to make our mark on Saint Louis University.  As you read this, we are accumulating our pesos, ready to spread out and invite you into our glorious union.

Praise Saturn.
