Registration: Freedom to Choose

As we amble our way into November, we all confront a period of intermingling excitement and dread: class registration. Registration begins Nov. 4 for seniors and ends Nov. 25 for freshmen and women.

As an interesting way to liven up the registration process, this editorial board has found a myriad of interesting class titles that may catch your eye.

-“Wonderful Tales and Exemplary Stories”

-“Women, Knights, Weapons and Love”

-“Death Investigation”

-“Sociology of Sports”

-“John Paul II: Person and Action”

-“Inter-Cultural Dialogue”- we’ve heard rave reviews on this one!

-“American Leftist Radicalism”

-“Sport in American Cultural History”

-“The History of Reading”

-“Soviet Agents/Spies on Screen”

-“Human Sexuality in the Black Community”

-There is a class dedicated to watching and analyzing Disney movies.

-Another about working on the art form of stage combat

-Lastly, there’s one that will talk about the philosophy behind the Holocaust

These classes, and many others, are unique opportunities for students to get away from the ordinary and learn something new. It is vitally important that students find classes they are passionate, or at least intrigued, about. It is proven that students learn better that way.

This doesn’t always mean completely inundating yourself with knowledge from one subject or major. The Jesuit education is supposed to teach the entire person, and that means taking a myriad of different classes that not only fill your core requirements, but also allow your mind to expand, to allow different theories, ideologies, religions, beliefs, trends and ways of life to percolate into your personal lexicon and consciousness; be transformed by it.

For many of you, your classes have been set for you since the day you arrived with bright eyes and bushy tails, and that’s really unfortunate. Frankly, you all deserve better. You deserve freedom (cue Braveheart montage) to choose secondary and tertiary subjects to explore.

However, for those of us lucky enough to have a little freedom when choosing classes, this time can be an extremely fun and thought provoking process. For those fortunate enough, the questions we ask during registration period doesn’t have to be, “Can I handle another semester of chemistry?” or “Why do I have to take a history course if I’m on the nursing track?” or, worst of all, “who’s the easiest professor I can take for this class?” Instead the questions can be, “What’s a subject I don’t know enough about, but I’d like to know more about?” or “What the heck does this class title even mean? Let’s find out!”

College is an experience like no other, but only if students have the capability to choose not only what’s best for their future, but also to choose topics that can challenge their beliefs.

This is a fundamental problem within this Jesuit institution. There is not enough room for choice for far too many students within this community. It is imperative for students to be well read, well rounded and well versed if they are to truly be men and women for others.
